Galaxy S20 series picks up the August 2024 security update

Introduction

The Galaxy S20 is the smallest of Samsung's 2020 flagship trio, and while many thought it would be the direct successor to the Galaxy S10e, it's actually much more well equipped than that handset, at least in comparison with the other models in this lineup.

As one of the most attainable models in the entire series, the Galaxy S20 will undoubtedly be the one that most customers consider when they're in the market for a new Samsung flagship. By all means, the Galaxy S20 is a very capable device that's equipped with some of the best tech you'll find on a high-end smartphone in 2020.

Design

The Galaxy S20 has a familiar Samsung flagship design, fashioned out of metal and glass. One major change Samsung made this year was that it put all of the physical keys on the right frame. It also removed the dedicated Bixby key.

The company is no longer using 3D curved glass like it did for earlier flagships. The 2.5D glass it's using allows for more subtle curved edges. The Galaxy S20 measures 151.7 x 69.1 x 7.9 mm and weighs 163g. It has an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, a USB Type-C port at the bottom that's accompanied by an AKG-tuned speaker. The handset doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Specifications

Like all of the other models in this series, the Galaxy S20 is powered by Samsung's Exynos 990 processor. It's available with 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. No other configuration is offered. It is possible to expand storage to 1TB using a microSD card.

There's a 4,000mAh battery keeping the lights on with support for 25W wired fast charging. The Galaxy S20 is available in both 5G and LTE-only variants, with availability depending on the market.

Display

As this is the smallest handset in the entire lineup, the Galaxy S20 features a 6.2-inch QHD+ 3200×1440 pixel resolution AMOLED Infinity-O display. Like the entire lineup, it also has a 120Hz refresh rate panel. There's an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor embedded in the display for biometric access control.

Camera

The Galaxy S20 has a robust camera system that consists of a 12-megapixel f/1.8 OIS primary camera coupled with a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide and a 64-megapixel f/2.0 OIS telephoto camera. It features 3x hybrid optic zoom in addition to 30x Super Resolution Zoom which Samsung calls Space Zoom.

A 10-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera is also present. Samsung introduced a host of new camera features like Single Take with this lineup as well. The handset can record 8K video at 24 frames per second.

Software and new features

Samsung shipped the Galaxy S20 with Android 10 and One UI 2.1 out of the box. Several new software features were introduced with this device, like Quick Share and Music Share. Samsung also worked with Google to integrate Google Duo in its own UX, enabling users to make Duo video calls using Samsung's native dialer app.

The Galaxy S20 is supported for major OS upgrades until Android 13. In December 2021, Samsung released the Android 12 One UI 4.0 update for the Galaxy S20.

Release date and price

The Galaxy S20 was unveiled by Samsung at its Unpacked event in San Francisco, California on February 11, 2020. It went on sale on March 6 and was made available in Cosmic Gray, Cloud Blue and Cloud Pink colors for $999.
