Introduction
The Galaxy A01 Core will probably go down in history as Samsung's most affordable smartphone of 2020. It's also likely to become the company's last smartphone to carry a user-removable battery, so even though it might not turn many heads due to its lack of modern features, it still is somewhat of an interesting conversation piece.
Simply put, Samsung's Galaxy A01 Core is unlike most other Galaxy phones on the market today, both inside and out.
Design
Although most Galaxy phones today have an Infinity-O or Infinity-V display, the Galaxy A01 Core harks back to an era that precedes display cutouts and notches. It has thick but equally-sized top and bottom bezels and it carries a completely flat display without rounded edges.
The removable back cover is made of polycarbonate painted in black, blue, or red, and it features a diagonal stripe pattern molded into the plastic. The physical buttons reside on the right edge, and the connectors are located on the lower edge. All things considered, the phone phone measures 141.7 x 67.5 x 8.6mm and weighs 150 grams.
Specifications
The Galaxy A01 Core is powered by a MediaTek MT6739 quad-core chipset clocked at 1.5GHz, paired with 1GB of RAM and 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage. Users can increase storage by up to 512GB through a dedicated microSD slot, and the phone also boasts dual-SIM capabilities.
Connectivity features include micro USB 2.0, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802 b/g/n 2.4GHz, GPS, Glonass, and a 3.5mm audio jack, but it lacks NFC. The components are powered by a 3,000mAh user-removable battery rated by Samsung for up to 14 hours if internet usage time over LTE or up to 11 hours of video playback.
Display
As mentioned above, the Galaxy A01 Core doesn't have a modern Infinity-O or Infinity-V display, instead it carries a completely flat PLS TFT LCD with thick top and bottom bezels.
The panel has a 5.3-inch diagonal and a resolution of 1480 by 720 pixels.
Camera
Another outdated element still employed by the Galaxy A01 Core is the single rear-facing camera. It's an 8MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, accompanied by an LED flash. It has auto focus capabilities but it lacks OIS.
The selfie camera has a 5MP resolution and an f/2.4 aperture.
Software and Features
It's only natural for a smartphone that has 1GB of RAM to ship with the stripped-down version of Android 10, and so the Galaxy A01 Core does exactly that. It runs Android 10 Go Edition out of the box and it lacks features like DeX support, Samsung Pay, and more. It is compatible with Smart Switch though, and it delivers a basic but functional software experience.
Availability
The Galaxy A01 Core debuted in Indonesia on July 21, 2020. Color availability differs by carrier and the phone's price is under $100, which is appropriate given its characteristics. Availability continues to expand, particularly in emerging markets.
