Ahead of the IFA 2024 trade show, which kicks off in Berlin on September 6, Samsung has announced a new update to its Food platform. Unsurprisingly, given the company's focus on AI (artificial intelligence) throughout the year, the latest update to Samsung Food leverages AI to improve the user experience.
Samsung Food helps Samsung fridge users create shopping lists, access recipes, use meal planners, and more. The app works hand-in-hand with Family Hub refrigerators, and thanks to clever camera technologies like AI Vision Inside, Samsung Food can scan the contents of your fridge and help you create and manage shopping lists and meal plans.
Now, Family Hub refrigerators no longer need AI Vision Inside to scan food items. Today, Samsung revealed (via WebWire) that it is rolling out an update to allow Family Hub fridge and Food+ users to scan food items from photos captured with their phones.
Scan with your phone, not your fridge
Samsung is adding Vision AI capabilities to the paid subscription tier of the Food mobile app, known as Food+. Thanks to this new feature, Samsung Food+ users can scan the contents of their refrigerators with their phones and take advantage of more advanced features that were previously exclusive to the uppermost Family Hub refrigerators equipped with AI Vision Inside.
The company states that the Vision AI update to the Samsung Food+ platform works with Family Hub refrigerators (equipped with 32-inch screens), even if they don't have internal cameras and AI Vision Inside. It doesn't look like the update works with other Samsung refrigerator lines.
Food+ with Vision AI can recognize ingredients in photos captured with a mobile phone and add them to the Family Hub screen's Food List. Therefore, the feature needs a fridge equipped with a display.

Aside from this exciting AI Vision update for Samsung Food+ users, the company also says it is improving the platform with better meal plans based on the user's Food List and by prioritizing ingredients nearing use-by-date “to support sustainable food practice goals.”
Furthermore, Samsung Food now boasts new tools that to help users maintain their health and reach wellness goals. The app can monitor caloric intake and create nutrition-focused “Tailored for You” meal plans and daily meal schedules.
Free users get three recommendations per week, whereas paid Samsung Food+ users take advantage of the platform's full capabilities throughout the week.
Samsung Food is now available in 104 countries and supports eight languages, including US and UK English, German, Spanish (Spain and Mexico), French, Italian, and Korean.
